The paralyzed man’s friends were determined to get him to Jesus. They started ripping apart the roof so they could lower the paralyzed man into the house!
Jesus was interrupted when chunks of clay and straw started falling on everyone. People started shouting at the friends to stop, but they didn’t! They worked quickly, and using ropes, they lowered the paralyzed man down in front of Jesus.
Jesus smiled! Jesus knew that the paralyzed man had come with the hope of being healed. But Jesus also knew that the paralyzed man believed in his heart that God didn’t love him and wouldn’t forgive him.
So, Jesus said something shocking. “Your sins are forgiven!”
Jesus knew that the religious leaders were upset by what he said, so he added, “What’s easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your bed and walk?’ I want you to know that I am the Messiah, so I really do have the power to forgive sins.”
Jesus turned back and once again smiled at the paralyzed man and said, “Get up, pick up your bed and walk.”
For the paralyzed man, Jesus showed how much he cared by healing his arms and legs, but even more importantly, Jesus assured him of God’s forgiveness and healed his heart.
