Psalm 147:3
Instead of just saying this verse over and over, here are three fun ways to help kids learn it!
He heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 (GNT)
Before you start practicing, make sure you talk a little about all the different words for “owie” – such as cut, scrap, boo-boo, bump… and… the fancy word “wound” (which this verse uses).
1. Echo the Verse with Actions
Begin by finding an “owie.”
It would be surprising if your child can’t find one, but if there is nothing current, they can find a spot that has healed.
Then say the verse slowly, one phrase at a time, adding simple actions as you go:
“He heals…”
Point up and then give a thumbs-up sign.
“the broken-hearted…”
Make the heart sign with both your hands, moving your fingers apart and back together again.
OR - Give each other a big hug!
“and bandages…”
Rub your hand over the “owie” spot.
“their wounds.”
Point to the “owie.”
Repeat the verse together, moving as you speak.
Then, as you say Psalm 147:3, use your fingers to display the numbers one, four, seven, and three.
Muscle memory turns words into a story their whole body remembers (combining auditory learning with kinesthetic learning).
2. Hear It and Shape It
Some kids think best while working with their hands!
At the end of a playdough session, suggest practicing a Bible verse before cleaning up. Make a heart and a person using cookie cutters.
Rip the heart into two or three pieces and poke a few holes in the person.
Now it’s time to practice the verse. (combining auditory, kinesthetic and visual learning)
Say the first phrase, “He heals the broken-hearted.”
Announce that it’s time to fix the heart-shape. Push the pieces back together and smooth it out. Repeat the phrase a few times while working.
Say the next phrase, “and bandages their wounds.”
Now it’s time to fix the person. Use small pieces of playdough to put into the holes. Repeat the phrase a few times.
While you clean up, say the whole verse together!
3. Put Picture Cards in Order
Lay the cards out in random order and say the verse together as your child puts them in the correct sequence: (combining auditory and visual learning with pre-reading skills)
You can mix the cards up again and repeat.
BONUS: Point out the connections that you see in your everyday life.
When your child gets an “owie,” give a hug and a Band-Aid and say the verse.
Talk about how God’s love is even bigger than your love and how He made our bodies so they can heal.
