Saul was a strong leader for Israel. He continued winning battles against their enemies, and one day God told Prophet Samuel that He had a special mission for Saul.

The Amalekites had become so wicked that God asked Saul to destroy them and all their possessions. Saul disobeyed by taking King Agag prisoner and by keeping the best livestock.

When Prophet Samuel confronted him, Saul tried to justify his actions and blame the soldiers. Samuel reminded Saul that God values obedience more than sacrifices and said that because Saul had rejected God's instructions, God had rejected him as king.

Even though what Prophet Samuel said upset Saul, he was more concerned about his reputation than about truly repenting.
