After becoming king, Saul formed an army to fight the Philistines, but when the Philistines’ enormous army gathered, many Israelites ran away and hid.

Saul was supposed to wait for Prophet Samuel to come and offer sacrifices to ask God for help in the war, but Saul got impatient. He didn’t want to lose any more of his army, so he hurried to offer the sacrifice himself.

When Prophet Samuel arrived and saw what Saul had done, he warned Saul that he had made a mistake. God was looking for a king who would faithfully follow Him.

Saul was too scared to attack the Philistines with his small army. Finally, Saul’s son, Jonathan, decided to step out in faith. With his armour-bearer by his side, Jonathan attacked the Philistines. God helped by sending an earthquake that threw the enemy into confusion.

As the Philistines fled, the Israelites who had deserted came back and rejoined Saul’s army. They won a great victory, but Saul continued to rely on his own judgment instead of waiting for God's guidance. Saul’s heart was beginning to change in the wrong direction.
