Although God had changed Saul's heart, he still felt unsure about becoming king. He hid when Prophet Samuel called all the people together for the announcement, and not everyone was pleased with God’s choice.
After the announcement, everyone went home, and it didn’t seem like much had changed. But soon after, the Ammonites threatened the Israelite town of Jabesh. They said that they would gouge out everyone’s right eye to disgrace all of Israel.
The townspeople of Jabesh sent messengers throughout Israel asking for help. When Saul heard what was happening, God empowered him to gather an army and lead Israel to victory, saving the eyes of all the people in Jabesh.
After the battle, Saul forgave those who hadn’t supported his kingship. He gave God the credit for helping them win the battle, and he asked Prophet Samuel to offer thank-you offerings to God in celebration.
