As Saul rushed his army into the battle that Jonathan had started, he foolishly ordered his soldiers not to eat until evening. As the Israelites chased the Philistines through a forest, Jonathan found a beehive and unknowingly broke his father’s rule by eating some honey.
Later that evening, after everyone had finally been allowed to eat, Saul asked God if he should keep chasing the Philistines. When God did not answer, Saul assumed someone had done something wrong. Saul boldly announced that whoever had sinned would be killed – even if it was Jonathan!
When it was revealed that it was Jonathan who had broken his rule, Saul would not admit his mistake. He insisted that Jonathan would have to die, but all the rest of the soldiers refused to let Saul harm Jonathan. Saul was forced to back down.
The day ended with Saul giving up the pursuit of the Philistines and failing to thank God for the victory. His actions showed how pride was replacing his trust in God.
