Kitchen Christianity: Yucky Chore Surprise

Although some parts of the Easter story can be a challenge for young kids, the part where Jesus washes the disciples’ feet is easy to understand and fun to personalize because kids LOVE being big helpers!

Just connect the dots between how, in the Bible, washing feet was a yucky chore… the fact that there are yucky chores at your house… and how they can surprise (serve) the person who normally does a yucky chore.

The chore could be…          

Swiffer-ing the doggy hairs from the corners – YUCK!

Wiping off the toilet seat – YUCK!   

Cleaning the cat box – Double YUCK!                                                 

Here’s a run-through for the yucky chore of emptying the smelly kitchen garbage.

The Set Up

Make a big deal about the stinky garbage and how it needs to be emptied.

Comment on how it’s such a yucky chore!

Ask...

“Whose job is it to empty the stinky garbage?”

The Delivery

Say...

“Remember how Jesus did a yucky chore and washed the disciples’ feet? Jesus surprised His disciples and showed them love.”

Excitedly propose the plan… They can help you do this yucky chore as a surprise for whoever is supposed to do it!

Help them empty the garbage and wash the bin. (Kids love using spray bottles and paper towels.)

The Conclusion

Put a gift bow on the lid and make sure that your kid gets acknowledgement from the person whom they surprised (served)!                                                                                

Serving others joyfully can be a practiced skill… done with little things.

It doesn’t have to be reserved for breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day!
