A woman that the Bible doesn’t tell us much about ends up divorced five times! How did that happen? What was wrong with her?
We can imagine what might have happened to her before Jesus met her at the town’s well.
Perhaps the woman’s story started like this:
Once there was a girl in the town of Sychar whose father died when she was ten years old. She cried and cried. It felt like there was a terrible hole in her heart that would never heal. Her dad had understood her and had always listened to her. Would her heart ever feel happy again?
When she grew up this woman married a nice young man. “Maybe he will heal my heart,” she thought, but they ended up arguing so much that they were both miserable. “Why are you so difficult?” her husband complained. Finally, he sent the woman back to her mother.
As the years went by, and after four more husbands, everyone decided that the woman was just plain bad. There could be no other reason for five divorces.
When the woman would go to the town’s well for water, all the other ladies would turn away, and the happy talking would change into whispers. How uncomfortable! The woman knew that they were saying ugly things about her, so she started going to the well later in the morning, when all the other ladies were gone.
One day, when the woman was on her way to the well, she realized that there was a stranger sitting by the well… all alone... in the hot sun.
She did not know that this stranger was Jesus, and that He was about to change her world!
to be continued…
