Kitchen Christianity: Lost in the Bubbles

My daughter loved arranging pennies up and down the stairs. This game could last long enough for me to get the vacuuming done (except for the stairs – of course).

Kids love coins, and it takes quite a few years for them to realize that a $10 bill is better than a handful of nickels. So, the next time they’re having trouble waiting for the cookies to bake and cool, why not do a little clean-up and learn a little more about God – all with the help of a coin and some bubbles.

Put extra dish soap in the water and let the bubbles pile up.

Gather a pile of dirty dishes and bury them in the bubbles.
(Leave out anything sharp or breakable!)

Present a shiny silver coin (like a toonie for us Canadians, or a quarter) and remind them of the story that Jesus told about the lady who lost a special silver coin. She searched her whole house carefully until she found it.

Say, “I’m going to lose my special silver coin down in the bubbles!”
Roll up their sleeves and let them begin the search.
Talk about how it’s hard to find a coin with all the bubbles and dishes in the way.
Ask: How is this different than Jesus’ story?
The lady had to search her whole house.
Her house probably had a dirt floor.
She didn’t have big windows and bright lights in her house.
Give a cheer when the coin is found!
Make it easier - Remove some of the dishes (and bubbles) and try again.

Make it harder - Try using a smaller coin (like a dime instead of a toonie).
Finish up by reminding your child about the meaning of Jesus’ story.
Each person is so special to God (even more special than a silver coin). He doesn’t want anyone to be lost. And when one person chooses to love God (and is found), all the angels in heaven have a party!
And now it’s time for your little party – a cookie celebration!!
