An Accident and an Angel
One beautiful afternoon, when I was just about three years old, my family enjoyed a walk together. Along the way, we noticed that our neighbour’s cow was sick. Wanting to warn our neighbour, my dad and big sister decided to ride their bikes over to his house. I begged to go too, even though my mom thought I needed a nap.
My dad felt sorry for me and allowed me to come along (perched on his handlebars)… but I was tired and whiny. On the way home, I finally stopped complaining, but that was because I had fallen asleep! My hands let go, and I fell off the bike, landing face-first on the gravel road. I had two deep cuts, one very close to my eye, and I had to go to the hospital for stitches.
The hospital was a scary place for a shy little girl, especially because my parents had to leave me there overnight. When they came back the next day, I was sleeping so deeply that I didn’t even know they were there.
Finally, after two days, my parents were able to take me home, and my mom asked if I had been scared all alone in the hospital. I confidently answered, “No, Mommy, because my angel was beside me the whole time.”
I don’t remember the accident or the hospital. My parents told me the story. But I have often wondered if God allowed me to see an angel when I was just a little girl, all alone.
God didn’t stop my accident from happening, but He was with me through it.
That reminds me of Joseph in the Bible. Many terrible things happened to Joseph - his brothers threw him into a pit, he was sold as a slave, and he was put in prison. God didn’t stop the bad things from happening, but He was with Joseph through it all.
Our world is messed up, and bad things happen, but we can remember that God is with us in the good times and the bad times. He will never leave us, and He sends His angels to watch over us.
