Is the Easter story emotional blackmail for kids?

Sometimes, it can sound that way, especially when we focus only on the suffering and then imply, “Jesus did this for you… So now you have to love Him and obey Him.”

The truth is: Jesus truly suffered, and He truly loves us. But He did not suffer to manipulate anyone into obedience.
